San Jose's light rail system, operated by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), stretches farther than San Jose's city limits; VTA runs the most expansive light rail system in the Bay Area. VTA's four light rail lines (one rush hour line, yellow, plus a purple line during football games) together move 35,000 people around Silicon Valley each weekday. VTA light rail services seven cities and dozens of attractions, with connections to CalTrain, ACE and Capitol Corridor throughout the system (see map, above). Currently, VTA and BART are working to provide a direct connection between the two systems at Montague, once BART extends to Milpitas in 2017.
